They say life is full of ups and downs. When I'm feeling like I need some positive vibes, I like to remind myself of what makes me happy. One of those things is songwriting. I guess everyone has a different definition of happiness, but for me, it is the feeling of being fulfilled. I always feel like I accomplished something amazing when I'm done writing a song. It's my form of therapy. When I'm done writing, it makes me feel like I've shed a layer of skin in a way.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like when I sit down and write a song, it's super relaxed and fun and the world is so perfect! I wish it was that easy:) In fact, for me it's really hard; the moments when I feel like I've hit a wall, the times when I don't know what the line should be, or what the song is really even about anymore! And of course the emotional roller coaster that I'm on when I'm drudging up certain feelings. But when I have a song that I've written in the palm of my hands, the overcoming of the challenges and having something that started out as nothing makes me feel high.
Since I was a little girl, I feel like I struggled a lot with emotional highs and lows, and my way of dealing with those excessive emotions was through music. I wrote poems and I sang. My grandmother used to tell me she knew it was me who walked through the front door because she would hear me singing. I never really connected singing the words I wrote down on paper into a full song until I was about 12 years old. The first time I ever wrote my first song was when my uncle passed away unexpectedly, and our world was flipped upside down. After my grandmother lost her son, she was forever heartbroken which in turn broke my heart as well. I wrote my first full song called 'Still In My Heart'. It helped me get through.
As we all know, this world is a seriously crazy place. For the sake of my sanity, I feel thankful that I have found something that helps me get through.
So now it's my turn to ask; what helps you get through?
